Both the seat and back can be left unlocked to allow the chair to rock and the back to follow your back as you lean forward and back.

Besides the ability to adjust the back one feature that makes this chair far superior to others I have owned is the fact that the seat can actually tilt down allowing you to maintain a comfortable position when leaning forward which with my 61 year old eyes I have to do a lot. With other chairs the back was fixed and the seat could only be locked in the level position.

Also the legs are long enough to keep the chair stable even when this 210 lb person leans back. My last chair would tip over when I leaned back unless I had the legs positioned right. The padding on this chair is far superior to others I have owned. The upholstery is at least as good if not better than any other chair I have owned.
